How to draw a pumpkin, step by step

Each diagram shows the new line in blue on top of what you already drew.

  1. 01

    Draw a wide oval

Lightly sketch an oval that is wider than it is tall, about 1.3 times as wide. Pumpkins are squat, not round like a ball.

  2. 02

    Add the middle rib

Draw two curved lines from the top center to the bottom center, bowing out a little, to make the front segment.

  3. 03

    Add the side ribs

Add two curved lines on each side. Each one bends more as it gets closer to the edge, which is what makes the pumpkin look round.

  4. 04

    Draw the stem

On top, draw a short, slightly bent stem that is wider at the base. Add a small curl of vine if you like.

  5. 05

    Carve a face (optional)

For a jack-o’-lantern, add two triangle eyes, a triangle nose and a wide grin with a square tooth or two.

  6. 06

    Ink and color

Go over the final lines with a pen, erase the pencil, then color it orange with darker orange in the grooves and a green stem.

How to draw a pumpkin: common questions

What is the easiest way to draw a pumpkin?

Draw a wide oval, add curved ribs from top to bottom, then a short stem. That is how to draw a pumpkin in three steps; the face is optional.

How do you make a pumpkin look round?

Curve the ribs. The middle rib is almost straight and each rib toward the edge bends more, following the outline of the oval.

How do I draw a jack-o’-lantern face?

Place the eyes about a third of the way down, the nose in the center and the mouth in the lower third. Triangles are the easiest shapes to start with.

Does the video show these exact steps?

No. The video traces the lines of your finished picture in its own order and then fills in the color. Use the six diagrams for learning the steps and the video for sharing the result.

What colors make a pumpkin look real?

A mid orange base, a darker orange or brown in the grooves between ribs, a light highlight on the front segment, and a dull green or brown stem.
